Daniel Costa

Daniel Costa masterfully unites the rich heritage of traditional craftsmanship with innovative approaches and contemporary aesthetics. His works bridge the gap between past and present.

At the heart of his creations lies the fiber - whether yak wool, sheep wool, nettle fibers, or wood - this is his primary material, shaping the tactile and technical qualities of his textiles and objects. His fascination lies particularly with the people and the extraordi- nary conditions under which the fibers for his creations are produced: Be it farmers who brave the harsh weather in the Himalayas with their yaks, be it mountain peoples who collect nettles and process them into fibers, or trees that take root in the barren soil, just as the mountains that shape all this.

The close relationship between humans, animals, plants, and the landscape has, over centuries, shaped the craftsmanship and techniques that allow for the masterful processing of these fibers. "Textiles accompany us from the cradle to the grave, carrying within them the stories of everyday life, myths, legends, and traditions,"

In his artistic creations, the fiber often transforms into a line, serving as a tool for drawing and defining the form and surface of an object. In his furniture creations, the artist turns the three-dimen- sional wood grain into a striking design feature.

Costa blends the powerful aesthetics of the moun- tain landscapes of his homeland with the delicacy and warmth of textile fibres and creates exciting harmonies. Furniture such as the Black Moon sofa is made from leftover materials and raw materials from the surrounding area. Using regional sheep's wool and local wood, Costa creates everyday objects that bring the atmosphere of the landscape into the living space. Born in South Tyrol, Costa left his homeland early to study at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. After graduating in 2012, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a creative assistant to textile expert Lidewij Edelkoort. This period was formative for his work, giving him deep insights into textiles and traditional techniques.

A research trip to India and Nepal in 2018 led to his first collection of handmade rugs. In 2020, he founded Studio Daniel Costa and has since been running his own collection of carpets and textiles, combining traditional craftsmanship techniques with modern design and sustainable production
