Intricate Craftsmanship

The first tier of our business is our partnership with the local farmers.

Our rugs begin the day a Swakara sheep is born. In the harsh Namibian desert it is a kindness to unburden the sheep by shearing them twice a year.

Washing and hand carding the clippings, shaking out the red dust and rambles collected on the sheeps' journey to forage for food.

Our wool dries in the arid African sun before being spun into thick yarn.

Hand built upright looms are the foundation on which we create the timeless skeleton of warp, and on this the weft is hand woven; thus the beginnings of a carpet form.

Every step of the process is “in-house:” shearing the sheep, washing the wool, hand carding, spinning the wool, and the final process of weaving.

Our process is authentic, transparent and highly relational as it relates to our artisans as well as the local farmers.

Passion for Swakara Wool

Each of our 100% wool rugs is handwoven, using Namibian Swakara wool in its natural colors. Swakara is a specific breed of Karakul sheep, found only in the South of Namibia.

Our wool carries the Furmark seal, showcasing the farmers commitment to the environment and animal welfare. It is a tough certification to hold and undergoes a yearly audit.

This breed of sheep has wool that is naturally coated in lanolin to protect the sheep from the harsh environment, making it an excellent, durable and lasting fibre.

The wool has natural tones of black, charcoal, brown, umber, silver and cream. These colors may be kept separate or blended, creating multiple possibilities when designing within this natural color palette.

"Culture making is rearranging the natural environment raw material for the flourishing of everyone."
